What fancy text fonts are and how to use them well
They aren't fonts: they're text symbols. That explains both why they work everywhere and their limitations.
What they really are
A normal keyboard only types one kind of letter, and networks like Instagram or TikTok don't let you change the font in your bio or comments. Fancy text takes advantage of the Unicode standard, which includes symbols that look like bold, italic, gothic or typewriter letters. They are different characters that look like another style, which is why they can be copied and pasted.
Where they work well
- Your Instagram, TikTok or X bio.
- Your visible display name or profile name.
- Short titles and highlighted phrases in a description.
- Chat messages and comments.
Limitations to know
- Accessibility: screen readers used by people with visual impairments may read them wrongly or skip them.
- Search: the networks' own search may not recognize them as normal text, which makes you harder to find.
- Compatibility: some older phones show empty boxes instead of letters.
- Accents: in some styles the accent looks slightly separated from the letter.
Good practices
- Use them to highlight a word or a short phrase, not whole paragraphs.
- Keep your name, keywords and contact details in normal text.
- Avoid them for prices, addresses and any important information.
- Test them on another device before considering the post done.
