How to create a QR code for your WiFi
Reading out a long password is awkward. With a QR code, pointing the phone camera is enough to connect.
How it works
A WiFi QR code stores the network name, the security type and the password in a format phones understand. When scanned with the camera, the phone offers to connect directly. It works on current iPhones and Android phones without installing any app.
What you need
- Network name, exactly as it appears in the list of networks, including capital letters and spaces.
- Network password.
- Security type. Almost all current networks use WPA, WPA2 or WPA3. If your network is open, choose “No password”.
Steps
- Open the QR generator and choose “WiFi network”.
- Type the network name and the password.
- Check the security type.
- Download the QR code as PNG to print it small or as SVG for large sizes.
The password is processed on your device and isn't sent to any server.
Where to put it
- At home, next to the router or on the fridge, for visitors.
- In a café, an office or a shop, on the table or the counter.
- In a holiday rental, inside the welcome guide.
Precautions
- Anyone who scans the code can connect, so don't leave it in plain sight if it's your private network.
- If your router allows it, create a guest network and use that one for the QR code.
- If you change the password, the old QR code stops working: create a new one.
- Test it with two or three phones before printing.
