How to create a WhatsApp link with a message and a QR code
A direct link saves your customers from having to save your number and type from scratch.
What a direct WhatsApp link is
It's a web address that, when tapped, opens a chat with you on WhatsApp. It can include a pre-written message, for example “Hi, I'd like more information”, so the person only has to press send.
How it's built
The link looks like this: https://wa.me/NUMBER?text=MESSAGE. The number goes in full, with the country code and without spaces, dashes or the + sign. The message is written with spaces and symbols encoded, which the tool does for you.
How to write the number
- Always include the country code: 1 for the United States, 44 for the United Kingdom or 61 for Australia.
- Remove leading zeros and spaces.
- Some countries have special rules for mobile numbers, such as Argentina, where a 9 goes after the country code. If the link doesn't open the chat, check that detail.
Steps to create it
- Open the generator and choose the WhatsApp option.
- Type your number with the country code.
- Type the message you want to appear.
- Copy the link or download the QR code.
Where to use it
- In your Instagram or TikTok bio.
- In your online shop or on your business card.
- On posters and shop windows, as a QR code.
Tips for a QR code that scans well
- Use a dark color on a light background.
- If you add a logo, keep it small.
- Don't print it too small and leave a margin around it.
- Test it with several phones before printing. For large sizes choose SVG, which keeps edges sharp.
