How to write a good Instagram and TikTok bio
Your bio is the first thing people read when they land on your profile. In a few words it has to explain who you are and why to follow you.
How much space you have
- Instagram: 150 characters.
- TikTok: 80 characters.
Emojis and line breaks count too, so every character matters. Write your bio in the counter before pasting it to check that it fits.
A structure that works
- What you do or talk about. For example: “Easy recipes in 15 minutes”.
- Who it's for or what followers get. For example: “For people with no time to cook”.
- A call to action. For example: “New recipes every Tuesday 👇”.
Tips
- Be specific. “Wedding photographer in Chicago” says much more than “I love photography”.
- Use line breaks to separate ideas. It reads better than a block of text.
- Few emojis, and only ones that add something, like an arrow pointing to the link.
- Keywords in normal text. If you use fancy letters, keep them to a detail: the network's search may not recognize them.
- Update it when you change topics or launch something new.
The link
Instagram lets you add links to your profile. On TikTok, the bio link may require a business account or a minimum number of followers, depending on the country. If you have several things to link, a page of your own with all your links saves you from changing it every week.
Review before saving
Read your bio as if you were someone who doesn't know you. If what you offer isn't clear in two seconds, simplify it.
